Year-End AFS for NPOs
NPO Annual Financial
Statements for South
African OrganisationsBoard-ready AFS for DSD, CIPC & audit
NPO annual financial statements prepared by CA(SA)s — statements, notes, fund disclosures and sign-off packs timed for NPO Directorate, CIPC and donor deadlines, not a last-minute scramble.

When Year-End Arrives and the Statements Are Not Ready
Six months after year-end creep up, a funder asks for audited accounts, or the NPO Directorate nine-month window is at risk — and the statements are still a spreadsheet draft. NPO annual financial statements from Turning Point Chartered Accountants SA are the year-end pack boards can sign, accounting officers and auditors can work from, and filings can follow.
We work only with registered NPOs, PBOs, NPCs, churches, trusts and donor-funded programmes. AFS sit under our NPO accountants practice, with the same firm that supports NPO bookkeeping, VAT, tax and audit when those questions appear.

What each service covers
Annual Financial Statements Preparation
Year-end statements of financial position and income and expenditure (or comprehensive income), with notes suited to your entity type — ready for board review before an accounting officer, independent review or audit.
AFS sit under our NPO accountants practice. Clean monthly books from NPO bookkeeping make year-end a review, not a rebuild.
Independent Review Support
When your constitution, MOI or funder expects an independent review rather than a full audit, we prepare the AFS and working papers so the reviewer can start from a complete pack.
Assurance itself is a separate engagement — see NPO audit and review services.
Audit-Ready Packs
Trial balance, lead schedules, fixed-asset registers, fund movements and supporting files organised so your auditor can test without chasing folders.
Use our audit-readiness checklist while you gather documents.
Board Sign-Off Packs
A board-facing pack of draft AFS, fund summaries and open questions so directors or trustees can approve before external sign-off.
Pairs with NPO management accounts and board reporting during the year.
Prior-Year Catch-Up AFS
When one or more years of statements were never finished, we rebuild the books first, then prepare the outstanding AFS so NPO Directorate, CIPC and donor deadlines can be planned.
Start with a Needs Analysis so we can size the backlog honestly.
Donor & Project AFS Splits
Fund and project schedules that tie to the same ledger as the entity AFS — restricted vs unrestricted balances your funders can follow.
Trust & NPO Entity AFS
Statements shaped for your legal form — registered NPO, NPC, trust, church or voluntary association — and the framework your founding document and stakeholders expect.
Entity questions sit alongside NPO legal structuring when the founding document itself needs attention.
Notes & Disclosure Support
Accounting policies, related-party notes, grant-income recognition, contingent liabilities and other disclosures that boards and auditors expect to see completed, not blank.
Tax and VAT issues that surface in the notes stay in-house with NPO tax and VAT for NPOs.
SARS & PBO Reporting Tie-In
Year-end numbers that line up with PBO filings, IT12EI (where applicable) and the income maps your tax team needs — so AFS and SARS packs do not tell different stories.
See PBO and Section 18A and tax services for NPOs.
Our approach
AFS That Survive Board, DSD and Auditor Scrutiny
We close or catch up the ledger, confirm the reporting framework with your board, then draft statements and notes with fund movements that tie back to the books. The pack is ready for directors or trustees to approve before an accounting officer, independent review or audit starts.
Preparing AFS is an accounting engagement — not the audit itself. Where TPCSA is also your auditor, independence rules keep the two roles apart. You brief one firm for books, AFS and assurance planning under our NPO accountants practice.
Start with a Needs Analysis if deadlines are tight or prior years are missing. Or go straight into year-end support under our NPO consulting suite — including audit services for NPOs when assurance is next.
Why Boards Choose TPCSA for AFS
- CA(SA) preparation of year-end statements — not a template dumped on the treasurer
- Fund and project disclosures that tie to the same ledger as donor reports
- Same practice as your bookkeeping, VAT and tax team — one brief
- Prior-year catch-up available when filings have slipped
- Clean handover packs for accounting officers, reviewers and auditors
Frequently Asked Questions About NPO Annual Financial Statements
What are annual financial statements for an NPO?
Annual financial statements (AFS) are the year-end accounts of the organisation — typically a statement of financial position, a statement of income and expenditure (or comprehensive income), notes, and fund or project disclosures where they apply. They are the base for the accounting officer’s report, independent review or audit, and for NPO Directorate and CIPC filings.
What does the NPO Act require for financial statements?
Registered NPOs must keep accounting records, draw up financial statements within six months of year-end, obtain an accounting officer’s report within two months after that, and submit the narrative report, AFS and accounting officer’s report to the NPO Directorate within nine months of year-end.
Do you prepare AFS for NPCs and trusts as well?
Yes. We prepare AFS suited to your entity type — registered NPO, non-profit company (NPC), trust or voluntary association — and the reporting framework your founding document and stakeholders expect.
Is preparing AFS the same as doing the audit?
No. Preparing AFS is an accounting engagement. An audit or independent review is a separate assurance engagement. Where TPCSA is also your auditor, independence rules keep the two roles apart. See NPO audit and review services.
Can you prepare AFS if our books are behind?
Usually yes — after a catch-up. We rebuild and reconcile the records first (often via NPO bookkeeping), then prepare the outstanding AFS so DSD, CIPC and donor deadlines can be planned.
What reporting framework do you use?
It depends on your entity type, founding document and stakeholder expectations — for example IFRS for SMEs, or another framework your board and auditor agree. We confirm the framework before drafting.
Will your AFS work for donor audits?
Clean AFS with clear fund disclosures are the foundation. Many donors still require a full audit or project schedules on top. We prepare AFS and donor schedules so they tie back to the same ledger — see donor reporting for NPOs.
How long does AFS preparation take?
It depends on how current the books are, the number of funds and projects, and whether prior-year issues need restating. After a Needs Analysis we give a realistic timeline against your NPO Directorate or CIPC deadline.
How much do NPO annual financial statements cost?
Fees depend on complexity, volume and whether catch-up work is needed first. We quote a fixed scope after a Needs Analysis — no open-ended billing.
